About Mahesh Ramchandani
Current position
Mr Mahesh Ramchandani is the Clinical Director of Ophthalmology at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital, where he leads the Eye Unit. He is a Senior Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon. He also consults and operates at the Harbour Hospital Poole, and the Nuffield Hospital Bournemouth.
specialist interest
Mr Ramchandani specializes in cataract surgery and in glaucoma.
In cataract surgery his case mix varies from straightforward cataracts to some of the most challenging cataract procedures in different eye types. Every cataract operation is different and he tailors the cataract operation to the needs of the individual focusing on precision, quality and safety. As well as standard lens implants and monovision, he is experienced with toric, multifocal and extended depth of focus lenses to reduce the dependence on spectacles.
In glaucoma he has extensive experience with ophthalmic lasers, and surgery for glaucoma including trabeculectomy, tubes and minimally invasive glaucoma procedures (MIGS).
He also runs a general ophthalmology clinic and he carries out some eyelid and corneal surgery.
Experience
Mr Ramchandani has carried out and supervised over 15000 intra ocular procedures.
As an educational and clinical supervisor he teaches surgical techniques in the operating theatre, in wet labs and simulation courses to turn trainee ophthalmologists into highly skilled consultant eye surgeons. He has been College Tutor for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists for 8 years, and National and International Examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh professional FRCS Exams in Ophthalmology for more than 10 years.
He sits on and chairs the Dorset Eye Board to guide ophthalmology service development across the region. He leads the regional glaucoma forum bringing together consultants from across the south coast.
education and training
Mr Ramchandani grew up in the North West of the UK graduating from the University of Manchester Medical School in 1993 where he carried out his House officer posts in Surgery and Medicine.
He gained specialist registrar training in Ophthalmology and undertook a research post at the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre.
Further subspecialist Fellowships in Glaucoma and in Cataract were at the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital and at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London. There he gained skills from his trainers: Prof Sir Peng Khaw, Prof Keith Barton, Prof Ian Murdoch and Prof Richard Wormald, world class ophthalmologists.
Mr Ramchandani’s ophthalmology experience has been gained from the three major International Eye Centres in the UK – Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre and Moorfields Eye Hospital. London. He maintains strong links with colleagues at these centres of excellence to benefit his patients.

Interests
Although Mr Ramchandani gets the most kicks and enjoyment from being in the operating theatre fixing an eye, he also enjoys swimming, cycling and walking in his free time.
